I am very interested in the Leig-Einheit freight cars but have little background info about them. Particularly, I want to know:

1) Which loco usually hauled these cars?
2) How many cars were there in a typical consist?

Thanks a lot
Chris

Chris,

Here is a start, albeit in German:

http://www.fh-merseburg.de/~nosske/EpocheII/fg/e2f_gssv.html

Just page down a little and he gets into the "Leig" (or "Liecht")-GĂĽterzug Very Happy

Hope it helps! It is a start anyway!

Peace,

Jim

Chris,

A little more info (albeit E-II):

http://www.fh-merseburg.de/~nosske/EpocheII/dd/e2d_4801.html

About half-way down the page Thomas gets to "EilgĂĽterzĂĽge", wherein Zug code "52 Leig" states a maximum of 10 axles. I do not know if that was clear in the previous link, and I just stumbled across this looking for something entirely different. Laughing

Peace,

Jim

The first link mentioned the restriction for the axle number, too. This means no more than two units in a Leig and maybe an extra freight car for large or dangerous loads.
Since these trains were light, and expected to be fast, they would often be hauled by passenger train engines. The class 38 in the picture appears very suitable according to www.epoche2.de, and so would be many other classes, except maybe for the dedicated express and dedicated shunting locomotives. But even class 17 engines were seen in Leig service.
It is implied on http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leig_(Eisenbahn) that the Leig stopped at the passenger platforms for loading and unloading.
