Hy guys,
if you do not know where to spend next (i.e. 2010) Easter holydays, hereunder a suggestion:
http://www.dampfspektakel.info/
I definitely aim to be there and I would like to have the opportunity to meet all the forumers that will attend the event. Why not to coordinate and organize a meeting in those days? |

It sounds superb and are they really running a 103-hauled Rheingold set?
I really would like to bag a 103 for haulage!
Dave. |

All I can say is will I ever actually be somewhere where's there's a tour, event or celebration involving the German or Belgian railways. This is like a bad joke lol :p

I don't believe it! For a change it looks as though I'll actually be in more-or-less the right area at the right time. The Mosel and Eifel: marvellous! |

It has been pointed out to me that I am getting married that weekend, SWMBO isn't up for escaping for a few days before as we have guests. Darn. |

Would really like to go to this event:
Have done a little homework on the event via the internet, will be contacting the German Tourist Board tomorrow to obtain any further information they might have.
Would hope to team up with someone from UK.
Have an reasonably extensive H/O German layout in my garage: Steam/Diesel/Electric, bit of a mixture. And would like to see the real thing!.
Photography is another of my hobbies, I travel to reasonably local UK steam events to enhance my picture collection, The German event in Easter 2010 would be a big plus!, unfortunatly not too 'street wise' travelling abroad alone in this sort of situation. Thought maybe going across by car, plenty of room, and makes chasing good location easier.
Or by other means of travel.
One needs -
Someone interested in German Railways
Interested in photography
Spare time
And some spare cash
Quite a lot to ask for.

Spoke to the German Tourist Board in London:
The young lady I spoke to did not know what I was talking about.
After a few minutes and doing a bit of homework, she came up with the oficial site address, which I already had.
They are however only able to sent some info. on hotel accommodation etc in the area.
regards

I would really like to go just for something different, my best train mate has to ask his wife first (yawn) it would be an exciting adventure to come from Aussie, I have a free ticket so that would help for a start
Anybody who gets any info could you please PM or post it on the forum re accomadation or how to get there from London which is where I would fly into.
Regards

Hello Anthony,
Just briefly for now:
From London to the Mosel region of Germany, favourite option for rail enthusiasts is through the Channel Tunnel by Eurostar train from St Pancras International to Brussels, change to DB ICE 3 or TGV Thalys for Koln, from Koln to Koblenz by IC (Inter City) or regional fast trains. Total cost very approximately £140'ish return.
Cheap Airlines such as Easyjet and Ryanair operate flights from London Gatwick or London Stanstead to Koln or Lahn, (Lahn is convenient for Saabrucken). From London these airports are served by train or cheaper option coach. Flights can cost as little as £1(promotions), but more usual discount would be £20 - £30'ish (return) if booked well in advance (3 months say). Check the Internet for latest offers / prices, it's some time since I've used them.
From London Heathrow Airport the major national carriers operate flights to Germany, British Airways and Lufthansa for example, some special offers if booked well in advance.
Accomodation; from this thread it's been suggested that already hotels in the region are filling up ! I would suggest trying Tourist Information in the town you are interested in. If you can still get accomodation there I think Cochem on the Mosel would be favourite, right in the thick of things and a lovely town on an interestiing river. Pinger at Remagen has been mentioned, it's close to the activity area, it's on the Rhine, so lots to see, recommended by railway staff and railway enthusiasts over many many years. I've stayed there, it's right next to the station at Remagen but Remagen is slightly out of the main event area ie the Moselstrecke.
You need to spend some time on the Internet to check prices etc
Nearer the event I'm sure DBAG will offer special 'Tourist Tickets' for travel around the Rhine / Mosel / Saar region.
Any questions feel free to ask, I'm going to this event, I've not booked anything yet as I've friends in the area. I will be watching for any news.
Regards

For 'Lahn' read Hahn - http://www.hahn-airport.de.
NB. Frankfurt Hahn, to give it its full title, is a very long way from anywhere. Bus/Taxi from Hahn Airport will take you to the Mosel Valley at Traben-Trarbach, for DB Rail services.
The flights are very cheap but you might well find Koln/Bonn Airport a better experience.

The 'Rheinland-Pfalz/Saarland Ticket' will be valid for all of the area in which this 'Spektakel' will take place. 19 Euro a day for one person, 27 Euro for up to 5 people travelling together on RE/RB/S-Bahn trains.
Full details at http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/prices/germany/laender_tickets.shtml or search for Rheinland-Pfalz-Ticket on Google.

G'day
Has anyone any suggestions as to the best place to stay - both town and pension / gasthaus / hotel - for the Australian contingent attending this event? Have found a gasthaus in Cochem that seems good, about 100metre from the railway station, but is Cochem the ideal location?
Neil & Greg - don't suppose either of you can join in?
Gruss

Much as I'd like to attend, I'll have to give this one a miss. Sounds like a great event.
