Updating Roco transmissions
Gents. I have a couple of older vintage Roco NS2200 diesels which have the old-style 'spring clutch' transmission on them. Is it possible to substitute these for something more modern using available Roco spares? Thanks, Dave.

Change the wormwheel with spring coupling for a wormwheel with cardan drivehead .

Is it really that simple Jacq? I'll be delighted if it is! I assume that the replacement part to use will be a spare from a more modern incarnation of the same model? Dave.

Dave, the biggest problem could be the cardan socket on the motorside. The older motors had the spring joint on the shaft so it should be easy to replace with a cardan socket. Some have the socket integrated in the flywheel. This might be a problem. NSWL http://www.nwsl.com and maybe Grandt Line Products http://www.grandtline.com offer complete cardan replacements. Sure there must be others, mayby in the UK ? Jacq

Dave, http://germanrail.8.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=728 I will be using APC to source the new motor for the BR93, if you can sort out what you need then perhaps we can save on shipping by making one order? Tim

I'll have a look then Tim as I need one or two other things. Dave.

Dave, Are you aware that Branchlines in the UK do plastic U/J sets? They're about £2.50 each from what I remember. If you've got one stuck in a flywheel it's often possible to twist them out - alternatively you can actually re-motor Roco stuff with Mashima, Canon or similar relatively easily. This might be recommended if you've got the old transmission in your models as the motors are likely to be past their best by now. I've got a couple of elderly Roco E-loks that have the spring drive - they've now got Canon 1833s in them (still with the spring drive) and they now run very well having been very rough and noisy with their original motors. Thanks Steph, I was scratching my head over a very noisey E40 and wondering how to cure it, Problem solved. David

Likewise, thanks Steph. Dave.
