The quest goes on. I hoped the Wolfgang Diener book on passenger car markings had details of the font but I found nothing inside it, only a lettering sheet used as a background to its cover artwork. It looked more like a DRG document than a DB or UIC one. My impression from past catalogues and purchases is that the several decal producers in Germany do almost any lettering you need for repaints. Just glancing at my UIC numbered stock (none of which is Mitropa, admittedly), the UIC numbering is definitely not Helvetica. I'm pretty sure the UIC lettering is standardized, but I can't say what the official style is. I came across this site today: http://www.heliweb.de/enkel/eisenbahn/ Wikipedia indicates that the standard lettering used on German railways for many years has been DIN 1451. There are samples to download on this site as well as a set of numbers I think you can install as a typeface on your computer (no alpha characters, however.) This is a sample image: It seems the current numbering is just an update of a style used since the first world war; notably the 6 and 9 have changed, which makes the newer numbering distinctive compared to the old.
