Modern Architecture
Although I prefer the scenes from the part, the rectangular structures you see everywhere deserve to be modelled. A few club members want a change from modelling traditional scenes and have taken up the challenge to construct something new. Work has started on a mockup in order to convince the rest of the club that it's worth doing. That's why I am looking for some good examples of layouts with modern architecture. Any recommendations ?

The most impressive for me is Wolfgang Frey's layout depicting the Stuttgart Hbf, marshalling yards, trackage, and sights as one comes into Stuttgart. All structures are scratchbuilt... Lots of pictures at http://www.freymodell.de/1.html For those reading German he gives a great many tips on construction in the Article published in MIBA-Anlagen 8 . I built my own modern flats and have a description at http://web.syr.edu/~pdverhey/eisenbahn/plattenbau2.shtml. I'm going to build a several in n-scale for my module project. Had gotten an BILT-EEZI kit advertised as 1:160, but proportions seem rather small so may rescale and or just borrow elements... Anything but Zuckerbäckerstil... Not to be forgotten, Auhagen's series of postwar apartments and other plattenbau type structures like the one below... . p.

Thanks, Peter, your Plattenbau blocks would certainly fit in to our scheme. A 'horrible' looking multistory car park is something else I am researching.

This is right up my alley - modern architecture... if you are looking for modern parking garages, I would look at the Cologne/Bonn Airport parking garage by Helmut Jahn as a model example. It is a steel and concrete garage (ugly), but clad in a stainless steel mesh that is a nice element to model. It allows viewing into the garage to see cars, lights, people, but adds an additional layer to the building. The best photo I can find at the moment is this: http://www.weavingideas.net/us/applications-products/architecture/projects/singleview/seiten/9/mode/1/hsref/terminal-2-flughafen-koeln-bonn.html but I will look for more when I get to the office.

Welcome to the forum, Bradley :D

Hi Alan, There's a British outline layout called Farkham with some very nice, well proportioned, scratch-built modern buldings, the website is http://www.farkham.co.uk/ Nick

As mentioned in my last post here at http://germanrail.8.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?p=11601#11601, I've completed my end module. This module features two scratchbuilt prefab cast concrete apt blocks based the WBS 70 style of the DDR. I took liberties in the number of levels and by adding balconies at the back... I think they capture the flavor quite well... There are larger images at http://web.syr.edu/~pdverhey/eisenbahn/pvmodule.shtml#end p.

Peter, the scene is amazing. Ultra-realistic look!
