Maerklin New Items Madness 2008
Maerklin, those great innovative free-thinkers have excelled themselves for 2008, they intend to release a Ludmilla
So, that's Piko, Brawa, Roco and now Maerklin.
I really hope they sell because the market beyond the Oder is either TT or DC.
Word really fail me because they are so many prototypes that have not been covered.

Releasing the Ludmilla isn't the issue - the fact that they've released the same version as everybody else is the issue.
So still no BR130, 131 unless (like me) you end up fiddling the Revell plastic kit onto a Roco or Brawa chassis. Which isn't easy because the BR130, 131 locos are somewhat shorter than the BR132...
Other than that I'm looking forward to seeing what EpV variations they bring out. I note that the BR185.5 announced by Trix isn't listed either.

Very frustrating.
Another version of the class 96, a DRG version of the 01.
Why can't they bring out a version of the class 18.5.
That being said, with the class 01 comming out for the DRG, there is, I suppose a possibility that they may bring out some carrages for it. Hopefully along the lines of the Märklin 42751 Wagen-Set 4x Schnellzugwagen der DRG
We live in hope.

Love it or loath it, Marklin are an important part of the hobby. No doubt the decision to produce these items is based on feedback of some sort (at least I can only hope so!).
Ultimately this is where the Marklin brand awareness comes in. Your typical Marklinist is not interested in either prototype or epoch. If its Marklin and they like it (assuming they can afford it) they will buy it. They may build prototypically epoch correct trains, but that is only on a train by train basis, not the layout as a whole.
Typical modeller mentality being either:
I can have an Epoch x locomotive on my layout because there is a preservation society on it :? or
Marklin have made, I like it, it will look good next to the other Marklin stuff.
One little know fact is that prior to WWII, Marklin were the leaders in German epoch II HO. Detail almost non existent, running qualities somewhat debateable, pricing at top end, scale closeish, but still genuine Epoch II equipment. (just think about it for a moment  )
Each to there own.
I am not into glossy brochures, prefer to see them online!

Wouldn't it be nice if the quality of Matrix was the same as Brawa or Fleischmann...
The stuff that's the same sort of prices as Brawa or Fleischmann is at least as good. The Trix MaK/Vossloh diesels are absolutely stunning - let down only by poor wheel profile. The latter of course also a 'feature' of Fleischmann.
And on the subject of the 'Hobby' range? Well it exists; the Trix BR185 I was raving about on this very forum is superb, metal bodied and about £75 here in the UK.
It's the needless repetition that annoys me - MaTrix have the opportunity (as does every other manufacturer) to bring something genuinely innovative to the market and yet rarely do.
Nonetheless, I've got a few Trix models and few more on order. I'm selective about what I order from them and I'm routinely impressed when the items finally arrive.

Steph,
Like you, I'm routinely impressed by Trix WHEN IT ARRIVES. Some continues to impress, others need drastic improvement.
The BR 01 147 is the latest to get the treatment: after getting a new one, as the first C-Sinus ran so badly on DC, the improvement was barely noticeable so I got online to sb-modellbau. I was pleased and a little surprised to get a Maxon conversion kit almost by return ("almost" as they don't accept cards). They're apologetic about the lack of flywheel but there really isn't room for one, so the end product matches the PCM BR 01 for performance. adequate but not quite perfect at low speeds.
Now the BR 05 003 has arrived, with "SoftDrive" C-Sinus, which will run slowly but needs careful use of only 10% of the controller arc.
Thank goodness Trix are going back to basics from now on, starting with the ICE-1. For me it's a line-up of Faulhaber and Maxon kits: BR 85, E 19, BR 10. I forgot the V 188 a/b and BR 80.
A Happy and Prosperous New Year to all.

David,
To be honest I'm not that impressed with the recent Trix steam locos. Both the 05 and 01 look decidedly toy-like to my eyes. (in photos and in the flesh). The BR10 only beats the ancient Rivarossi version because the shape around the front may be slightly better captured.
I guess it's the coarse wheel profile and relatively crude valvegear that just don't cut it for me...
I'm told they work well on DCC but that analogue running is problematic - to be expected when you consider the technology employed.
I wonder if the recent trade announcement might mean the adoption of a finer wheel profile fro Trix models (I doubt it) - even Fleischmann are using the RP25 profile on their new BR95!

Well, the Trix ICE 1 has been pretty widely publicised.
The Class 64 was rumoured last year (39640?) so even though it is a duplicate, it is a new item for Marklin. I suppose that we can expect in the next year or so a new class 24. It is a shame that they just repainted the old 86 last year.
Now after a couple of years of wanting the class 64 some German forums are complaining that there is not a class 23!
You can please some of the people some of the time and all of the people none of the time!
Isn't this a great hobby!

Both the Marklin and Trix new item shows are on lokshops web site.
Interestingly all the bi-level coaches are only a trix product and unsurprisingly are scale length!

Interesting that both Mätrix and Piko are tooling up new Silberlings for 2008. Still, they've chosen different driving cars, so there's some variety!
John Woodall- 01-24-2008
Yes, but ultimately there are not a lot of new "new" items again this year. Most of the stuff is re-paints of existing items.
For me three huge dissapointments.
1) No coachs for the DRG 01
2) a "budget" edition class 24
3) The DRG class 59. Why would I want to pay a premium for a display case for it!

Tim,
If I were to get one, it would work hard pulling a 50 axel train up 2% grades.
It is truely one of Marklins most stunning locomotives. Runs quietly, great sound, great pulling power, and doesn;t look like your typical Marklin locomotive.
Still EUR600 is rather expensive for a locomotive.
