Locomotive Wheels
Apologies if this topic has been covered previously, but a search revealed nothing.
I have noticed that many, if not most, model steam locomotives have very shiny rolling surfaces on their wheels (although this does not seem to be as much in evidence on the la-*test*-('") releases) - is there any easily applicable treatment that can be used to make the wheels look more realistic without altering their electrical properties?
Thanks in advance,
Neil
The wheels of the prototype are usually also shiny where they make contact with the track. Of course it is recommended to keep the model wheels clean as well. What stands out on the model are the shiny flanges which are proportionally larger than the prototype.
Carrs metal colourings- use the brass version for n/s or Casey's Gun Blue. Both are extremely toxic.

Here's a guideline for applying the metal colouring. Note that you should restore the tyre area to the shiny original for optimal electrical contact.
