Historical Atlas
Dear All,
I am looking for a good german railway atlas for pre-1980. I wondered if anyone good recommend one to me.
best wishes
Richard Yarlett
Dear Tim,
I would like both east and west, but west is my primary interest, especially the Eifel region and Bavaria. I have found this title
Eisenbahn-Taschenatlas. Deutschland - Österreich - Schweiz (Broschiert)
but the maps do not look so easy to read. A copy of the map that comes with the Kursbuch would I think be the best option, but finding one seems nigh on impossible. Any advice greatly appreciated.
Richard
This shop specialises on timetables and the corresponding maps (old and new). The maps that come with the timetable (Kursbuch-Übersichtskarten)
can be bought here for as little as 4 Euro. It appears that 1980 and 1984 are available:

Richard,
I purchase one on eBay Germany for a couple of Euros - keywords are Bahn-Special, Bahn-Atlas, Bahnland Deutschland.
Good luck.
Neil
Dear All,
Thanks for the prompt advice. I will follow up the suggestions you have made. Hopefully my German will be sufficient for the task.
Cheers,
Richard
Hi Richard,
Good advice given so far, also try Google search or Drehscheibe, I have found numerous maps of the Wuppertal area on these websites.

DB themselves sell the timetable map and the much more detailed whole-system map to a scale of 1:750 000. My last purchase was of the June 1992 version showing DB and DR as separate entities just before they linked up. I'm not sure whether the "DB Karten- und Luftbildstelle (KuL)" has moved to Berlin but it was at Kaiserstrasse 3, Mainz, up to 1993. They published a booklet giving details of what was available. Sorry I can't recall the price but they were cheap enough for me to have a new one every few years.
Eisenbahn-Kurier (EK-Verlag) have an extensive series of reprinted large scale BD (regional) maps, very detailed, of DRG, DRB, DB and DR origin. The list is in the EK order form every month. They don't take cards but used to accept UK cheques or cash.
Bahn-Extra (GeraMond) used to publish fairly regular "Bahn-Atlas" special issues which used sections of the timetable maps, text and photos.
Stanfords Mail Order Department should be able to get a German rail atlas in book form, or any detailed topographical maps you need. They produced a Swiss rail atlas and 1:100 000 maps to cover the Schwarzwaldbahn for me very quickly a few years ago.
Fortunately a Service friend salvaged for me 1:50 000 NATO-surplus maps covering many of the West German railway centres. An ordinary 1:300 000 road atlas also has a lot of railway information on it if you pick the right publisher.
Can any other map enthusiast bring us up to date on this fascinating subject?
David
