DB BR65
Would anyone care to enlighten me on the use, history and location of the DB BR65 class?
Always a bit of a Cinderella as the real thing and as a model, I rather like these massive machines.

I noted them on Essen- Wuppertal wendlezug propelling three silberling coaches.
They were mostly used on branch line trains.
Always been a favorite of mine.

13 of them built in 1950/1951 by Krauss-Maffei AG with a further 5 in 1955/1956 and the last one went in 1973.
Very much a neglected class.

The last of them ended up in Aschaffenburg alongside a quartet of BR64's which worked the line to Miltenberg. I've thought about modelling that line, partly because of the BR65's. The last one was retired in '71 (or was it 73??)or so. A couple of years later the 64's were dispersed or retired and 211's took over.
I think before that they were in Darmstadt, just a little to the west of Aschaffenburg.

edit: corrected typos on Aschaffenburg spelling

BR65 DB
Fond memories of this class. Travelled between Darmstadt and Erbach and then on the the afternoon service to Eberbach ( behind BR50).
Erbach had until recently a brewery opposite the station. Excellent beer at the time : 1969.
The 65s were turned at both Erbach and Eberbach for their return journeys.
EK produced a magazine on the BR65 (DB and DR) as well as the BR66.
The later Fleischmann model in both N and HO is of the later version with a round cab roof. I do not know of any kits available to change this to the earlier ones.

Class 65
Hello Tim,
another variety of class 65. At the end of 1960ies at least 2 locos have been allocated to Dillenburg depot, in order to head train to Westerwald. But Dillenburg preferred Prussian T 14.1( 93). So the locos were used in the marshalling yard of Dillenburg. For these means of service, locos were fitted with an antenna on a board at fireman s side of the cab.
I presume the service ended in 1968. If You are intereste I will try to get out more.
Best regards, Wolfgang

Thanks David for the information. The Weinert catalogue contains some interesting items.
I wonder if Fleischmann will ever make the 065 001 -013 variant?

BR 65
Hello Jim,
as I have promised, some data about 65 locos at Dillenburg Marshalling Yard.
At Dillenburg depot have been allocated 65 008, 65 010 and 65 011.
On 20st January of 1967 65 008 came as first loco from Darmstadt depot.
From Limburg 65 010 in March and 65 009 +65 011 in May.
At November 10th 1967 65 009 suffered a breakdown of frame and was retreated from service. 1968 065 011 was set out of service because of an accident and in summer 065 010 was withdrawn.
The last loco left, was 065 008 -the loco returned to Darmstadt in 1968/69.
65 locos were replaced by class 55.25(!!!). The last locos has been set out of service in 1970. So class 55.25 has been finally replaced by 290 class diesels
changing from Gießen to Dillenburg.
A phot shows 65 010 at Dillenburg with a radio antenna at front of the cab at engineers s side.
