A weathered 220
Inspired by pictures on Die Bundesbahnzeit, here's my attempt at a late 1970s/early 1980s BR 220. I had initially faded the paintwork, but this effort seems to have been lost in the dirtying process. Perhaps I should leave longer between washes (I only left it overnight). Anyway, this was the faded appearance, now sadly lost. Any comments welcomed! Cheers Rich

Looks good, Rich, how did you fade the factory finish?

Did the DB ever let them get that dirty ? http://www.loks-aus-kiel.de/index.php?nav=1401007&lang=1&file=mak_2000014_52&action=image http://www.loks-aus-kiel.de/index.php?nav=1401007&lang=1&file=mak_2000016_51&action=image http://www.loks-aus-kiel.de/index.php?nav=1401007&lang=1&file=mak_2000019_51&action=image Of course, the DB wouldn't admit it  Nice work, Rich

The dirt is very much too heavy- I was trying to replicate a certain effect, such as on 220 006 here: http://bundesbahnzeit.de/Galerien/V200%20Hochburg%20L%FCbeck/bild02.htm To be honest, I failed, but I like the result. Fading and paint chipping is the order of the day- for the next one (there will be a next!) I'll work with predominantly fading and very minimal work with the 'grime' paint (a home brew of black with a touch of tan and white). The fading is achieved simply with a brush with a very small amount of off-white paint on, then dipped in thinners and sploshed all over the body. After the initial application, dry the brush and make rapid vertical strokes to get an even coat- the brush will need occasional wipes to dry during the process. I stress that the strokes should be vertical, as fading is generally caused by the effects of sun and water, which runs down the bodyside. Rich

The effect is very good Rich. A commendable effort indeed. I'm pleased to see that you're not afraid to weather these pricey German locos - neither am I! Dave.
